Mandatory ethics training requirements for new and continuing REALTOR® members was established by the National Association’s Board of Directors in 1999 to heighten member awareness of the key tenets of the Code of Ethics; to create an awareness of and appreciation for the role the Code can and should play in their professional lives; to enhance professionalism and competency; and to encourage REALTORS® to view their Code of Ethics as a living, viable, guide in their daily dealings with clients, customers, and the public. View the official Code of Ethics document.
Existing REALTOR® members are required to take a Code of Ethics course once every three-year-cycle. The current cycle ends on December 31, 2027. The training must meet specific learning objectives and criteria established by the National Association of REALTORS®. SMDRA will only accept training/classes from a REALTOR® association, or through SMDRA’s Online Education Options.
Upon joining SMDRA, all REALTOR® members are required to complete the New Member Ethics and Orientation classes within 90 days. A new member who has completed the New Member Code of Ethics & Orientation during the current cycle shall not be required to complete additional ethics training until the next two-year cycle.
