REALTOR® Associations and Advocacy

Even if you don’t have the time to track all of the action at City Hall, the State Legislature, Congress, or the many regulatory agencies, be assured that we do. REALTOR® Associations work to monitor legislative policy at the local, state, and national level to ensure pro-homeownership and private property rights and a pro-real estate business environment. REALTOR® associations accomplish these goals through strong correspondence with legislators and politicians, candidate interview programs, and through the efforts of the REALTOR® Political Action Committee.

Why Does REALTOR® Advocacy Matter?

If you’re a REALTOR®, politics is your business. As a member of SMDRA, you can have the peace of mind that when it comes to protecting your political interests, you’re not alone.  While you’re focusing on developing your real estate business, SMDRA, CAR, and NAR are making sure you are politically protected and able to do business.

How Does SMDRA Advocate for Your Business?

The Government Affairs program at the South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association is dedicated to promoting housing opportunity, protecting private property rights, and fostering economic development and a pro-business environment conducive to the real estate profession. To accomplish these goals, the Government affairs committee works to:

  • Monitor local, state and federal public policies that affect property rights, as well as other issues relating to the business of real estate.
  • Raise, with the help of REALTOR® volunteers, Political Action Committee (PAC) funds to assist candidates who support the real estate industry.
  • Meet with elected officials to present our members’ views and opinions on relevant issues and legislation.
  • Generate opportunities for REALTORS® to interact with local, state and federal officials.

Candidate Interview Program

At the direction of the CEO and Government Affairs Director, this committee holds interviews for candidates running for local institutions such as special districts, school boards, city/town/village/county and state governments to ascertain their position on REALTOR® related issues. Candidates selected receive SMDRA support in the form of an endorsement for election, and an RPAC contribution as approved by the Board of Directors.
