Chairman’s Message – Mary Ann Hinrichsen, SMDRA Chairman of the BoardToggle
I was just thinking about our profession and the definition of Professionalism. It occurs to me, as each of us is only human and easily caught up in emotion, that sometimes we fail to separate ourselves from the fray. In doing so, we are actually NOT benefiting our sellers or our buyers. We are the source of information for our clients. We must be able to dispense all information dispassionately and objectively. In so doing, you are providing a clear service to your client and letting them make the best possible decisions. This should all happen in a friendly, but firm manner. Isn’t that what you would want?
Let’s take this a step further. What does it mean to be Professional? It means be considerate and courteous at all times… in other words, follow the ‘Golden Rule.” I don’t believe that really needs further elucidation, but I will anyway. Part of courtesy is to communicate clearly, but respectfully. ALWAYS ask yourself, would you want to be on the receiving end of a rant or dismissive behavior by another agent? Then do not be the one to ever exhibit such behavior.
There are such simple guidelines in our business. Make appointments and be on time. Leave a business card when showing so that a seller actually knows you did take the time to view their house. Frequently much time is spent having that home perfect so your client will wish to purchase. If you can’t make the appointment, call and cancel and explain why you must cancel. It is ok to say that your client doesn’t care for the location, or you ran short on time. It is far more important to communicate.
Be responsible and courteous to your fellow REALTORS® with feedback and in negotiations. Each of you should be performing under the direction of your client, after your professional advice has been given. Always recognize this is the case and be understanding. Everyone wants to make it work. The better your attitude, the more likely a contract will be negotiated and the smoother the entire transaction will be.
Ultimately, the goal is to be responsible and respectful to your clients, your fellow REALTORS®, AND to all others that help facilitate the transaction. Only you can control your attitude, from the beginning showing to the closing table and anyone in between who may be part of the transaction. Put a smile in your voice, let the petty nonsense drop away, and charm with diplomacy and sheer common sense. Life is short! Make every day polish your reputation!
