About the Academy

The SMDRA Leadership Academy program was developed to increase participation in and understanding of the three levels of the REALTOR® organization, increased community involvement including state and local government, and increased exposure to the local business community, and ALL designed to develop future Association leaders. This program will identify emerging leaders, increase participation, and strengthen the Association and the real estate  industry.

Who Is Eligible?

All SMDRA REALTOR® Members in good standing are eligible to apply. ALL interested parties would complete an application and acknowledge the enrollment fee of $250. Applications must be completed and submitted to SMDRA staff. The Academy Task Force will recommend to the Board of Directors which applicants to approve. Attendance in the Leadership Academy does not guarantee a position of leadership in the Association, although it is designed to develop future Association leaders. Participants have 2 cycles to complete requirements.

Why Would I Want to Participate?

Academy graduates will gain a clear understanding of the organizational structure of all 3 levels of the REALTOR® Association and the challenges of leadership. Attendees will come to understand how SMDRA strives to provide advantages to members in a changing industry. The Academy will build relationships, increase understanding of the importance of political advocacy, and the personal benefit through increased industry knowledge, self-confidence, and business networking.

What to Expect:

  1. Leadership Training Class – (Wednesday, December 14th from 8am-Noon @ SMDRA) Leadership Made Simple – Renowned leadership expert and author of the Ninja Sales Training Classes Larry Kendall will teach the five keys to leadership and give attendees the keys to carry out essential leadership functions.
  1. Association Organization, Structure and Orientation(Wednesday, January 11th from noon – 4 PM @ CAR Headquarters) This class is designed to expose attendees to the full structure of the local, state and national associations of REALTORS. While reviewing the operations of SMDRA, CAR and NAR, you’ll to learn about our value proposition to members, governing documents, organization and structure, core standards, and more. This class will be presented by the CEO, Chairman of the Board and representatives from CAR and NAR.
  1. Chamber Economic Forecast Breakfast – (Friday, January 13th, 2017 from 7:30 am-9am @ Marriott Park Meadows) Attend one of the Colorado’s premiere economic forecast breakfasts with business leaders from around the Denver metro area.
  1. Annual Professional Standards Training – (Thursday, February 2nd, 2017 from 8am-Noon @ SMDRA) The foundation of the REALTOR® Association is the enforcement of the Code of Ethics. This class is facilitated by Jon Goodman and there no charge for SMDRA members.
  1. Advocacy Day – REALTOR® Day at the Capitol – (Wednesday, February 8th, 2017 @Colorado State Capitol) Attendees will interact with local and state elected officials and learn about SMDRA and CAR’s role in protecting the real estate industry and America’s home owners. The morning session will focus on South Metro issues and topics before joining CAR’s program at lunch, where members from across Colorado meet at the State Capitol to learn and discuss the important policy issues affecting the real estate industry. The cost is included in the registration for the academy.
  1. Interactive Team Building – (Thursday, February 23rd, 2017 from 1pm – 5 pm @ SMDRA) Good leaders need to work together, as well as learn to trust those that work with them. This exercise mixes fun together with learning teamwork and leadership skills. Dress comfortably!

Optional Class – 5 Easy Ways to Lose Your License and Get Sued – (Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017 from 1pm-4pm) – This informative class taught by Jordan May, FJGG is worth 3 hours of CE Credit. Here you’ll learn the latest legal problems facing REALTORS® and how to avoid them.

  1. Chamber Day – (Friday, March 3rd, 2017 from 11:30am-2:30pm @ the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce) This session is designed to reveal the strong ties between our association and the local chamber of commerce. Attendees will learn the role of the chamber in the public sector, some economic conditions currently affecting business and what the future holds for the local economy and the real estate industry.
  1. Managing Meetings and Personalities – (Wednesday, March 15th, 2017 from 9am-Noon @ SMDRA) This session will teach attendees how to lead constructive meetings and manage volunteer time effectively, focusing on goals, constructive debate and managing personalities. This class is facilitated by REALTOR® Leader Greg Zadel.
  1. Leadership and Public Speaking(TBT April 12th OR 13th @ SMDRA) – Leadership often includes the need to speak effectively in front of people. This interactive session is designed to give attendees helpful tips, anecdotes, and strategies for maximizing your effectiveness among others.
  1. SMDRA Board of Directors Meeting – (one meeting Jan – April 2017) – REQUIRED ONE MEETING.  Get the inside information on how the business of SMDRA is conducted at a Board of Directors meeting.  Each participant must attend one meeting.  Please let SMDRA staff know which date you plan to attend 24 hrs prior to the meeting.  

Leadership Academy Graduation – (Friday, April 28th @ Diamond Circle Event)

OPTIONAL:  Attend SMDRA’s Diamond Circle Event where Top Producing members are recognized and celebrated.  Leadership Academy Graduates will now be included in those that are recognized for their completion of the SMDRA Leadership Academy!  Graduates will be recognized on stage and presented their certificate of completion and leadership pin.  This event is optional and is NOT covered in the cost of the program.

The South Metro Denver REALTOR® Association conducts an annual Leadership Academy which enhances the skills of those interested in furthering their leadership skills.  The program is first and foremost a personal development program that will benefit participants in their daily lives – either at the firm level, through participation in their REALTOR organizations or through any community organizations or associations.  Building strong leaders for tomorrow will help ensure our industry and communities are prepared for the challenges ahead.
